Silage Pit Reshaping Project
As harvest season approaches in Central Alberta, farmers are preparing their operations for maximum efficiency, and that includes ensuring their silage pits are ready for heavy use. At Bullhead Environmental, we recently completed a Silage Pit Reshaping Project that showcases how we help agricultural clients optimize their storage systems before the silage starts rolling in.
Why Silage Pit Reshaping Matters
Over time, silage pits can become worn down, uneven, or suffer from poor drainage due to heavy use, moisture, and equipment traffic. When a silage pit doesn’t have proper drainage, several problems can arise that affect both the quality of feed and the efficiency of your operation:
Leachate Buildup: Excess moisture can create harmful leachate, which not only poses an environmental risk but also leads to nutrient loss in your feed.
Spoilage: Poor drainage leads to water pooling in the pit, encouraging mold and bacteria growth that can spoil silage and harm livestock.
Compaction Issues: Wet pits are harder to pack effectively, reducing oxygen exclusion and leading to poor fermentation.
Operational Delays: Waterlogged pits are difficult to access and slow down the silage process during critical harvest windows.
Structural Degradation: Over time, standing water can weaken the pit's foundation and walls, causing costly long-term damage.
Using our grader, we were able to reshape the existing pit, including adjusting the slope of the walls and leveling the floor for improved drainage, accessibility, and silage storage performance.
